Why Shoo. stays with you underground

On the metro, a phone can’t always tell where it is. Here’s how Shoo. avoids telling you that you missed a train you’re sitting on.

Underground, your iPhone loses the sky. It still reports a position, but it comes from the station’s Wi-Fi or the nearest cell tower, and it can be hundreds of metres out. Your phone’s motion sensor doesn’t always feel a smooth metro either.

Early builds of Shoo. trusted those readings a little too much. A rider on the M1 could be told “You missed it” while the train was carrying them to the next station.

Only a fix from the sky can say you missed it

Since build 55, Shoo. only decides you aren’t on your service when it has a position it can trust: fresh, accurate to within 30 metres, and with a measured speed. Station Wi-Fi, cell towers, the last street position before you went down and the motion sensor never count.

Three readings, not one. It takes three trustworthy readings, 15 seconds apart, showing you still at the stop well after the service left, and only if your phone hasn’t felt a vehicle since it departed.

Around each departure, GPS keeps reporting even when you stand still, so on an open-air platform Shoo. can still tell when a train left without you.

And when you really did miss it

For the first ten minutes of a ride your phone hasn’t confirmed, the trip shows “Missed the M1?”. One tap plans the next one from where you are now. It works in all 17 languages.
